The best tourism villages of the world in 2022 are…
In recent months, the dynamics of travel have undergone a transformation, indicating a shift in preferences post-pandemic. Rather than opting for well-trodden tourist spots, people seem to be increasingly drawn to unconventional and less-explored destinations worldwide. Reflecting this trend, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) recently unveiled its compilation of the world’s ‘finest villages.’
On its official platform, the UN agency, dedicated to fostering “responsible, sustainable, and universally accessible tourism,” presented a roster of 32 global destinations designated as the ‘Best Tourism Villages 2022.’ The accolade acknowledges rural locales that embrace tourism as a catalyst for development, generating new job opportunities and income while preserving and promoting community-centric values and products.
The UNWTO emphasized that the initiative lauds villages for their dedication to innovation and sustainability across economic, social, and environmental dimensions. This commitment aligns with the pursuit of tourism development in harmony with the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
Remarkably, out of the 136 villages proposed by 57 UNWTO member states, 32 made it to the list. The villages are presented in alphabetical order, without any specific rankings. The recognition spans 18 countries across five global regions. UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili commented, “The Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO showcase the power of the sector to drive economic diversification and create opportunities for all outside of big cities.”
Additionally, the UNWTO announced its intention to collaborate with certain villages through the Upgrade Programme. This initiative aims to assist villages that may not fully meet the criteria for formal recognition. The selected villages will receive support from UNWTO and its partners to enhance elements identified as gaps in the evaluation process.
As for Khonoma, located 20 km from the state capital Kohima, the village holds the moniker ‘warrior village’ due to its storied resistance during the British colonial era. Khonoma, renowned for its natural blessings, intriguing history, and rich culture, is hailed as the first ‘green village’ in Asia. It has become a magnet for bird enthusiasts worldwide, drawn to the village for a leisurely bird-watching experience. The village stands out as one of the most visited destinations in the state of Nagaland, according to Nagaland Tourism.
