Three Indian destinations in line for UNWTO’s ‘Best Tourism Village’; know about them here

Kongthong, a village nestled in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district, has been selected as one of India’s three nominees for the ‘Best Tourism Village’ recognition by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Positioned amidst the picturesque Sohra and Pynursla ridges, Kongthong not only captivates visitors with its scenic beauty but also boasts a unique cultural tradition known as Jingrwai Iawbei, involving the practice of tune-giving. In this village, residents are identified not by names but by distinct tunes, earning Kongthong the moniker ‘whistling village of India.’

Comprising 10 major clans, Kongthong has four founding clans—Khongsit, Majaw, Lynrah, and Pohnong. This cultural richness adds to the village’s appeal. Alongside Kongthong, the other two Indian villages making it to the UNWTO’s list are Pochampally in Telangana and Ladhpura Khas in Madhya Pradesh.

Pochampally, situated in the Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district of Telangana, is renowned for its traditional weaving, featuring geometric patterns in the ikat style of dyeing. This village, recognized for its vibrant textile production, earned Intellectual Property Rights Protection or Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2005. The village is home to numerous looms that produce this distinctive textile in large quantities.

In contrast, Ladhpura Khas is located in the Orchha Tehsil of Tikamgarh district in Madhya Pradesh, approximately seven kilometers from Orchha, another popular tourist destination. This village stands out for its proximity to Orchha and contributes to the cultural tapestry of the region.
